The two tax prep biggies continue to attack each other, mislead consumers, and overcharge the unknowing public. Please get a total cost promise before you sign anything. RALs will still cost you nearly one third your refund while getting you your money only 2-3 days quicker. The people at these companies are not sufficiently trained and you will be falling victim to yet another big corporate scam. H&R Block is advertising Free fileing to get you in the door. They are only offering this for a 1040 EZ form and will charge extra for the State form. They will also try to get you to pay for an RAL. (Refund anticipation loan.) This is a stupid thing to fall for because they will process your loan, for a fee, but they will not give you your check until the IRS approves your refund which takes anywhere from 12 hours to three days. Then once you get your check it will be reduced by the loan application fee and the interest of the loan which in the past has been in the neighborhood of 400%! They want your hard earned money. Get a total cost in writing before signing anything. AND, The IRS is online now and it only takes the IRS 3-12 days to put your money, ALL OF IT, into your bank account with direct deposit.
Think about it. How can H&R Block and Jackson Hewett afford to pay for those expensive commercials on television not to mention all of the other advertising unless they are making big bucks off you the unsuspecting consumer? The biggies have been raking in the bucks in past years by taking advantage of folks impatience. Really now, what is to be gained by paying up to 1/3 your refund to recieve part of it 2 or 3 days early? And top that off by the fact that the people figuring your taxes are inexperienced and unqualified.

Beware of false wording! Jackson Hewett has a television ad out you may have seen. They say in their ad that you can get your refund in "as little as" one day. Do you believe them? The standard length of time it takes the IRS to deposit your refund into your bank account this year is 5 to 12 days after it is accepted. Why pay one third of your refund to get it MAYBE 2 days sooner?
They also say you can get this RAL for "no out of pocket expenses". They are not telling an outright lie but they are deceiving people. They don't charge out of pocket but you can bet your zippy they will get a big piece of that refund. Do you really want to do business with a company that offers deception and inferior service just to get as much of your money as possible? This is the way of the big corporate CEO's.
Who is figuring your return and what is their experience? We have applicants all the time expecting big starting salary's for the experience they have from H&R Block or Jackson Hewett but I won't hire them. Why? I will tell you why. They know no more about taxes then the client. They have been through a short training period that taught them how to follow directions and do data entry. In other words, they know how to fill in the blanks which is no more than you can do yourself. They do not go to continuing education classes that cost $300-$400 each year. They simply are not qualified.
These companies use trickery and loopholes to sidestep laws that assure your protection. We encourage you to look out for yourself by comparing prices and service quality. If it wasn't true I wouldn't say it.
